This HWA leaf separator is used to prevent leaves from flowing into the further drainage system or infiltration system, with all the negative consequences this entails. The leaf separator should be placed between the vertical HWA pipes.

The advantage of a leaf separator over a leaf trap, which is installed in the gutter, is that the gutter won't become clogged by leaves, preventing water from flowing into the vertical downpipe. A clogged gutter can lead to flooding, allowing rainwater to flow down walls and windows, and sometimes even into the house.

The leaf separator features a grid that ejects the leaves, allowing rainwater to flow past the grid and into the drainage system. Remaining leaves can be easily removed with the leaf scraper.

Another advantage of the leaf separator is that if there's insufficient drainage capacity after the separator, the gutter won't overflow. The leaf separator therefore serves as an overflow function.
